[Liste II/64] SOL INVICTUS Middle imperial romans, IIIth centuy AD

With the assassination of the Emperor Severus Alexander on 18 March 235, the Roman Empire sank into a civil war of fifty years, now called the crisis of the third century. During the same period, the ascent of the Sassanid dynasty in Iran began to seriously threaten the east of the Empire: in 259, the Emperor Valerian was captured by Shapur I, and died in captivity the following year.

Gallien, his eldest son, who had reigned at his side since 253, succeeded him and continued the war in the east. His own son, Salonin, and the prefect of Silvanus, resided in Colonia Agrippina (Cologne) to strengthen the loyalty of the local legions, which did not prevent the local governor of the Germanic provinces, Postume, from rebellious. He attacked Colonia Agrippa, and in the confusion which followed the deaths of Salonin and Silvanus, proclaimed himself emperor of the Gauls, with Augusta Treverorum (Trier) as capital. This new empire soon extended to the Germanic and Gallic provinces, as well as to Hispania and Britain, possessed its own senate and its own consuls.

Circa the same period the eastern provinces seceded under the command of Queen Zenobia, forming the empire of Palmyra. It was not until 272 that Emperor Aurelian succeeded in reinstatement of this territory in the Empire. The East being now secure, he turned to the west and resumed, one year later, the empire of Gaul.

Pictures of my army. There are more than 36 elements as the army covers several possible troop options. It remains to photograph the Auxiliarii and the Symarchiarii because these troops are being re-bedded.

The testudo below is used to materialize the camp even if it is obviously not a camp or luggage.

The "family photo" below is only temporary because it still lacks the Auxiliarii and the Symarchiarii which are being re-bedded.
